As a child of the Midwest, one of my favorite times of the year was winter. During the winter, my siblings and I would find footprints previously made in the snow and try to walk within those footprints without disturbing the footprint. Looking at me now, I can only imagine how difficult a task that can be, being I’m much older and much bigger.
As Christians, we are called to complete the same task that my siblings and I set out to complete, with the exception of the footprints of Jesus. As we read the New Testament, it is revealed to us the numerous times that Jesus is recorded leaving us footprints (examples) to follow. These footprints (examples) served as written copies, patterns and examples for imitation. Think back with me to grade school years and learning how to write the letters of the alphabet. In teaching one how to write the letters, the teacher would hand out worksheets with pre-written letters on them and we would have to imitate them to the best of our ability. This is what we are called to do with Jesus and His attitude (Lk 23:34), actions (John 13:1-17), sufferings (1 Pet. 2:21-23), etc. So, as we walk the Christian walk, let us follow in the footprints of Jesus with joy and fulfillment: Serving, Suffering, and Saving.
Truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them (John 13:16-17).
